Patination refers to the thin layer which develops on the surface of a bronze, copper or glass artefact, usually as a result of it being buried in soil or encased in clay. Over the years, the soil acids erode the decorative surface, creating variations in colour, texture and appearance – all of which offer assurance of the item’s age and authenticity as an antiquity.
