Chrysanthemums, which originated in China and were cultivated there as early as the 15th century BC, are popular motifs in Chinese ceramics. Considered one of the “four gentlemen of flowers”, chrysanthemums are symbolic of longevity and prosperity in Chinese culture. Cultivation of the flowers in Japan began in the 8th century AD, and they soon became symbolic of the Japanese nobility and imperial family.
