$196.86

A fine Ancient Greek clay cup featuring painted geometric decoration. The body of the cup is cylindrical in shape, tapering from a wide, circular mouth to a constricted neck. A small conical foot, with a concave interior, features at the base. The cup is decorated with a base white layer, upon which three encircling bands of red pigment, each framed by two thinner lines of dark pigment, are evenly spaced around the rim, centre and base of the body. Additional bands of dark pigment encircle the top and base of the foot. There is a continuous crack leading from the rim to the foot and back to the rim where the cup has been repaired. Some additional hairline cracks feature near the rim and on the underside of the foot. Wear such as scratches, indentations and pitting feature to the surface alongside minor earthy encrustations.

The geometric decoration seen on this cup is a reflection of a key artistic movement in Mediterranean civilisations in the 2nd-1st Millennium BC. They were characterised by encircling bands of linear and geometric patterns, which later developed to include animals, human figures, and eventually narrative scenes. Such motifs recall the artistic output of the preceding Mycenaean and Minoan civilisations, as well as contemporary Etruscan and Apulian styles in Italy.
