Many grand civilisations inhabited the area of Western Asia in Antiquity, and their wealth and prosperity are witnessed by the very sophisticated precious metal crafting of jewellery. Gold would have been hammered down to a thin layer and manipulated into different shapes. Gold, electrum and silver jewellery would have featured gold granules, glass and semi-precious stone inlays and detailed engravings. Fine granulation along with filigree were techniques at the centre of Near Eastern and Western Asiatic jewellery production, and which were later adopted by the Greeks, Etruscans and Romans.

A fine Western Asiatic gold capsule pendant with openwork filigree detailing. The pendant is hollow and tubular in shape. The outer ends terminate in smooth gold hemispheres with a single granule. The central body is comprised of alternating openwork filigree swirls and twisted ropework bands. There is a suspension loop of twisted bands at the top. The piece features some wear consistent with age, and a crack to the suspension loop.
