The Egyptians wore amulets alongside other pieces of jewellery. They were decorative, but also served a practical purpose, being considered to bestow power and protection upon the wearer. Many of the amulets have been found inside the wrappings of mummies, as they were used to prepare the deceased for the afterlife.

The lotus flower was an important symbol in Ancient Egyptian life and mythology. As the flower closes at night and reopens in the day, it was associated with rebirth and regeneration, as well as the passage of the sun. Subsequently it was closely associated with the sun god Ra, who was believed to be reborn within a lotus flower each day. Lotus imagery is a steady constant throughout Egyptian art.
