Buddha was a teacher in South Asia who educated his followers on Buddhism. He is believed to have lived and taught mostly in the eastern part of Ancient India, sometime between the sixth and fourth centuries BC. He is recognised by Buddhists as an enlightened teacher, who shared his insights to help sentient beings end the cycle of rebirth and suffering. Accounts of his life, discourses, and monastic rules are believed by Buddhists to have been summarised after his death and memorised by his followers. Various collections of teachings attributed to him were passed down by oral tradition, and not committed to writing until approximately 400 years later. The pose of this Buddha, sat cross-legged and with his right hand on top of his left in his lap, is called the Dhyana Mudra. It is known as the gesture of concentration, for healing and meditation.

A gilt bronze figure of Buddha, sat cross-legged on a lotus flower dais which is elaborately decorated with floral motifs and three other divine figures, positioned within pillared shrines. His face is serene, and has downcast eyes and bow-shaped lips. He sits with both hands placed palm-upwards in his lap. The D-shaped base details an engraved lotus flower, and is hollow to contain Buddhist relics.
