Lucius Cornelius Scipio Asiaticus belonged to the Marian faction during Sulla’s first and second civil wars. He was appointed consul with Gaius Norbanus in 83 BC, in which year Lucius Cornelius Sulla returned to the Italian Peninsula, and advanced against the consuls. During the first civil war, Sulla successfully defeated Norbanus in Italy, and convinced the troops of Scipio to desert their general. Scipio was taken prisoner in his camp along with his son, Lucius, but was released by Sulla unharmed. He was, however, included in the proscription in the following year, 82 BC, whereupon he fled to Massilia and spent the rest of his life there.
