Ancient Appliqués, Protomes & Busts
Appliqués were usually attached as decoration to larger items like horse tack, chariots, domestic items or jewellery boxes. In ancient Greece, protomes were often in the form of a head, bust or half figure and were used to adorn pottery, sculpture or architecture. Ancient appliqués and protomes usually depicted characters from Greek and Roman mythology and religion. Please note: if you are looking for fragments, we have listed them under their retrospective category (ie. what they were originally a part of).
