The drachm was the standard unit of silver coinage across ancient Greece, even though the weights differed across the mints of various city-states. The didrachm was twice that of the drachm in both worth and weight. The Athenian drachm (the most widely accepted weight standard of the city states) weighed just over 4.3g, and the Athenian didrachm weighed about 8.6g accordingly. The majority of coins from the earliest Athenian series (known as the Wappenmünzen) were didrachms, with images such as Gorgons and the Owl of Athens appearing on the obverse.
